Better than Before by Gretchen Rubin is an excellent book to help anyone trying to break bad habits and install helpful habits. She offers practical and concrete suggestions that are worth a try. Rubin starts by talking about self-knowledge. Are you an Upholder, Questioner, Obliger or a Rebel? What distinctions explain your habits? e.g. Are you lark or owl? A marathoner, sprinter or procrastinator? An over or under buyer? A simplicity lover or an abundance lover? and so on. There is just too much good stuff in this book to capture here.
The chapter I am enjoying today is about Loop-hole spotting! I think it’s my ability to find loop-holes (and excuses) that are my downfall which is why this was so confronting when I read it. My biggest loop-hole is saying “I’ll do it tomorrow”! I am a terror for putting things off until tomorrow. And, of course, tomorrow never comes. Another loophole might be Concern for Others. Clients will say, “Oh I had to eat that extra piece of pie otherwise I would have hurt my friend’s feelings”. Another great one is the “Oh this doesn’t count” loophole….
Love this book. Highly recommend it for everyone, and of course for my ADHD friends.
